So about NXT Takeover: Toronto II & WWE Summerslam PPV

Broadcasting from the Scotiabank Arena, it’s NXT Takeover and WWE Summerslam and this is my short & concise review of both shows.

NXT TakeOver: Toronto II

  • NXT Tag Team Championship Match
    • The Street Profits (C) vs The Undisputed Era.

This was a great and fun opener and really got the crowd hyping. Montez Ford was the MVP for this match with his high-flying moves. Street Profits retain and the chances of The UE being “dripping in gold” has been dashed once again.

  • Io Shirai vs Candice LeRae

This was the PPV debut of Candice and the re-debut of Heel Io as they go toe to toe in the only non-title match on the card. This was a great match and it made Io very very strong and she fits the heel role very well.  Io wins.

  • NXT North American Championship Triple Threat Match
    • Velveteen Dream (C) vs Roderick Strong vs Pete Dunne.

This was a fantastic match by all 3 guys and each of them shone on their own during this match. Especially Pete Dunne who was especially strong. Velveteen Dream retained his NXT North American Championship.

  • NXT Women’s Championship Match
    • Shayna Baszler (C) vs Mia Yim.

Yim went into this match as the underdog and was a good favorite to take the title off Shayna which would allow her to go to the Main Roster. It wasn’t to be as Yim submitted to Shayna’s coquina clutch to retain the NXT Women’s Championship.

  • NXT Championship 2-out-of-3-falls Match.
    • Adam Cole (C) vs Johnny Gargano

First fall and it is a regular wrestling match and it would go to Gargano as Adam Cole hit the challenger with a steel chair which would bring the match into a 2nd fall with it being a Street Fight.

Cole wins the 2nd fall via submission. 3rd fall would be a steel cage match but it would be more like an Ambrose Aslysum match as there were weapons attached to the cage and there was a barbed wire going across the job so there was no way that either guy could escape. The finish of the match would see Gargano from the top of the cage plunging Adam Cole through a table but it would be Cole who threw his arm over Gargano for the pinfall. Adam Cole retains his NXT Championship.

WWE Summerslam

  • WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match
    • Drew Gulak (C) vs Oney Lorcan

Fun match. Would have loved to see a title change. Hopefully he gets one in the future. Drew retains.

  • Apollo Crews vs Buddy Murphy

This was OK until Rowan attacked Buddy Murphy after claiming that it was him that attacked Roman Reigns.

  • WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship Match
    • Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross (C) vs The IIconics.

This was a fun match but I knew that it would be too soon for Alexa & Nikki to be dropping the titles.

  • RAW Women’s Championship Match
    • Becky Lynch (C) vs Natalya

This was an OK match in terms of the actual match, but it was a poor build as it was all “Natty is from Canada…” I wish WWE would stop shoving that down our throats. Becky retains.

  • Goldberg vs Dolph Ziggler

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

  • United States Championship Match
    • AJ Styles (C) vs Ricochet

This was an exciting match. Shame that it was after the comedy fest that was Goldberg vs Dolph Ziggler so it lost a bit of momentum. AJ retained.

  • Kevin Owens vs Shane McMahon

Kevin Owens kicked Shane in the balls… Gave him a Stunner and that was it. Good enough match but I am very much done with Shane being on-screen. Go away, Shane.

  • SmackDown Women’s Championship Match.
    • Bayley (C) vs Ember Moon.

Why is Bayley champion? Ever since becoming the champion, she has done nothing with the title. It should have been given to Ember and then a good feud would have developed from that. Not this crap.

  • Charlotte Flair vs Trish Stratus

Trish’s final match so she went out on her back. This was an OK match. Payday for both women.

  • WWE Championship Match
    • Kofi Kingston (C) vs Randy Orton

Even though I predicted that Randy was going to win the Championship, during the match I thought, “Is there any point in Randy being champion? Who is going to feud with him?” Kofi retains.

  • The Fiend (Bray Wyatt) vs Finn Bálor

This was probably the most exciting match on the card. Everything about “The Fiend” was just perfect. Let’s hope that WWE doesn’t change anything about him now.

  • Universal Championship Match
    • Brock Lesnar (C) vs Seth Rollins

Really cool match and given the way Seth as going into this match, I was really surprised that the title changed hands. Let’s hope he has a good opponent to challenge him at Clash of Champions.
